One of the biggest myths my clients come to me with is that carbs make you fat. They assume that just because I give them a meal plan with a higher carb program, that I’m going to make them fat.
Fact: Carbohydrates alone do not make you fat.
Because low-carb diets have become a popular way to shred pounds fast, people have this misconception about carbs. Most people think that carbs are the reason behind weight gain.
Due to this fallacy, and the no-carbs craze diets, carbs have been stigmatized.
Don’t Be Scared of Carbs
Some clients can’t help but to cringe at the word carbs. When I tell clients that carbs will be included in their diet, they shrink in fear as if carbohydrates were their kryptonite.
I have to reassure them that my goal isn’t to make them gain weight. It takes some convincing, but I promise them that I will help them lose weight by allowing themselves to eat what they want, including carbohydrates!
Once we cross our two week weigh in, they are not only pleased to see a slimmer waist, but even more ecstatic that they were able to eat carbs.
Too Much of Anything is Bad for You
Like the old saying goes, too much of anything is bad for you. When it comes to carbohydrate and protein, too much of either two will make you gain weight.
Typically, when people decide to eat low-carb diets, they increase protein and fat. This increase of protein and fat causes them to feel fuller longer. In turn, this decreases their total daily caloric intake.
Also, low carb diets help eliminate all the junk foods, which is where a lot of our excess calories come from.
We All Need Carbs
I’ve work with a variety of clients who have weight loss goals. People who want to lose weight, bodybuilding, competitors, athletes, and those who needed to lose weight for health-related reasons. The one thing they all had in common was they all had carbs in their nutritional program.
I’m not saying that I haven’t worked with clients whose bodies needed a lower carb nutritional program to make weight loss changes, but the number is a very small percentage when compared to the masses.
Conclusion
If you are currently on a no to low-carb nutritional program, be consistent and see how it works for you! Just make sure to familiarize yourself with how the nutritional program can affect how you lose or gain weight.
Although low-carb diets seem to help shed pounds fast, they are not always the best way to lose weight nor are they the best way to keep from gaining weight. In addition, staying away from carbs isn’t sustainable for the rest of your life.
Most importantly, like with any new program, always consult with your doctor before starting a new diet plan. Working with your doctor ahead of time is a good way of making sure that the diet plan you choose works for you.
